38. Opposition / Kui

Line 6: Isolated by opposition, one sees a pig covered in mud and a wagon full of demons. First, one draws the bow; then, one unstrings the bow. It is not a robber, but a suitor. Going forward, one encounters rain, and there is good fortune.

Line 5: Remorse vanishes. The kinsman bites through the skin. In going forward, what blame could there be?

Line 4: Isolated by opposition, one meets a great man. Through mutual sincerity and trust, though the situation is perilous, there is no blame.

Line 3: One sees the wagon dragged back and the oxen halted. The man suffers the branding of his forehead and the slicing of his nose. No beginning, but an end.

Line 2: Meeting one's lord in a narrow alley. No blame.

Line 1: Remorse vanishes. If you lose your horse, do not pursue it; it will return of its own accord. When you encounter the ill-intentioned, remain without blame.
